Maternity, Paternity and Parental Leave Simplified!

Starting a family is a big deal not only for a woman but also for a man. It takes a lot of courage to come to a decision of starting a family because taking care of a new life is not a small deal. Not only should one be financially capable of providing a living standard but also spiritually and emotionally strong. The news of the maternity, although, brings a lot of happiness but with this news comes great responsibility.

It is a great big deal; that is why the parents are expecting to have options for maternity, paternity and parental leaves. If the parents are working parents, they may take leave for their newborn from their workplaces and it has given them this right by law.

Maternity Leave

Maternity leave is specifically for the biological mothers during their period of pregnancy. The work stress and load can be very dangerous for a pregnant woman and that is why it is allowed by law that a mother who is expecting can take a leave from the office. A pregnant woman can take a maternity leave that begins 4 months prior to the delivery date and may last for almost 18 weeks. It is the choice of the mother whether she wants this leave before or after your child is born. This leave helps a mother relax before the delivery so that there are no complications at the time of delivery due to work stress or load.

Paternity Leave

Paternity leave is specifically for the biological father. We hear about this leave very rarely but this leave is allowed by law and a man can take this leave soon after the birth of his baby.

At the initial stage when the baby is born, a lot of attention has to be given to not only to the newborn but also to the mother. This leave is for men who want to help their wife and newborn baby to settle and adapt to this new lifestyle. This type of break will be starting right after your baby has been born.

Parental Leave

Parental leave is for both the parents either biological or adoptive. Either the mother or the father is able to both take this vacation right after their maternity or paternity leave. The main focus of this leave is to let the baby get familiar with both the parents and help the parents adapt to the new lifestyle. This leave helps parents to set their timings and decide how they are going to manage. Both parents can take this leave together or even at different times.

These are the main differences between maternity, paternity and paternal leaves. If you are expecting, you can take leave according to the law and you can object if your employer refuses to give you any of these leaves.
